Insomnia Q&A

What is insomnia?

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that makes it difficult to stay asleep or fall asleep. It can cause severe daytime drowsiness and other crippling symptoms when left untreated. See the California Coast Family Practice experts at the first sign of a sleep disorder.

What are the symptoms of insomnia?

Common symptoms of insomnia include:

  • Waking up often during the night
  • Difficulty falling asleep
  • Fatigue
  • Not feeling well-rested
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Waking up too early
  • Depression, anxiety, or irritability
  • Increased accidents and errors
  • Difficulty paying attention or focusing

These and other possible symptoms can hinder your quality of life, drain your energy levels, and negatively affect your mood.

What are the risk factors for insomnia?

While anyone can develop insomnia, some factors boost your risk of experiencing it. Examples include:

  • Ongoing stress
  • Irregular sleep schedules
  • Taking naps late in the day
  • Overeating in the evening
  • Late-night exercise
  • Some medications
  • Mental health disorders
  • Some medical conditions
  • Sleep apnea
  • Alcohol, caffeine, or nicotine
  • Being a woman
  • Being over age 60

Adopting healthy lifestyle habits is the best way to reduce your risk of developing insomnia or other sleep disorders.

How does my doctor diagnose insomnia?

To find out if you have insomnia or other conditions that negatively affect your sleep, a provider discusses your symptoms and medical history with you. They check your vital signs, complete a physical exam, and may order blood tests or a sleep study.

What are common insomnia treatments?

If you struggle with insomnia, common treatments your provider could recommend include:

Lifestyle changes

To get better rest, you can try eating healthy foods, getting regular exercise (but not right before bed), maintaining a healthy body weight, keeping stress levels low, and practicing relaxation techniques.

Avoid alcohol and caffeine late in the day and don’t smoke. Limit or avoid naps, don’t consume large meals right before bed, and set a regular sleep schedule.

If you have insomnia, taking prescription medications prescribed by your California Coast Family Practice specialist can improve sleep quality.
